Project Overview

The Southwest wing of Old Parliment House, Canberra ACT, was refurbished as a part of the Australian Federation Fund to house educational facilities within the building. The initial process required a master planning exercise and heritage study to establish a direction for the next 10 years.

Stage one provided new education facilities on the lower floor for the Australian Electoral Commission including a theatrette, public display areas, election rooms, seminar room and administration areas. The existing courtyard at this level was upgraded for easier circulation. At the main floor extra display spaces were provided for both Old Parliament House and the AEC with a new bridge that links back to the main circulation in the house.

Stage 2 provided a large ‘in the round’ public theatre in the couryard. This served to reduce the pressure on the House of Representatives and the Senate chambers.
